Third-seeded Salisbury to square off against sixth-seeded Wesley in CAC first round

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University men's basketball team has earned the No. 3 seed in the 2018 Capital Athletic Conference Tournament. The Sea Gulls will play in the first round of the CAC tournament on Tuesday, February 20 when they will host No. 6 seed Wesley College at 7 p.m. in Maggs Physical Activities Center.

How we got here

Salisbury enters the tournament as the No. 3 seed after completing the regular season with a 17-8 overall record and conference record of 13-5. Since the turn of the calendar year the Sea Gulls have posted a 10-4 record including a stretch of six-straight victories from January 7 to January 24. During that win streak the maroon and gold won by an average of 15.5 points per game.

How they got here

Wesley posted an overall record of 13-12 in the regular season while recording a 9-9 conference record. The Wolverines advanced to the tournament as the final seed after winning four of its final five games of the season, including an exciting 68-66 buzzer beating victory over the University of Mary Washington.  

Scouting the Wolverines

Three players finished the season averaging double-digit points per game, with Brian Cameron leading Wesley with 20.6 points per game. Both Evan Anderson and JW Lawson are each averaging double-digit points as well, netting 13.4 and 13.1, respectively. Cameron currently leads the conference in both points per game and three-point field goal percentage, knocking down 46.8 percent of his attempts this season. Wesley as a team ranks fourth in the conference averaging 75.4 points per game this season.

Last time we met

Both teams met just six days ago in Dover, Delaware with Wesley getting the better of Salisbury 67-57. The Wolverines led the entire game, knocking down 45.1 percent of their field goal attempts while going 8-of-17 from behind the three-point arc. Four different players tallied double-digit points in the contest with Brian Cameron leading the way with 17 while Evan Anderson contributed 15 points. Defensively Wesley held the Sea Gulls to a 26.7 clip from the field and an 11.6 percent mark from long range. Chad Barcikowski was the only Salisbury player to tally double-digit points, netting 24.

Stellar senior

Barcikowski has been spectacular for the Sea Gulls this season, averaging 17.0 points per game while also knocking 41.2 percent of his field goal attempts. Barcikowski currently ranks tenth in program history in three-point field goal percentage totaling a 37.3 percent mark while moving into seventh all-time in three-pointers made with 160. He has totaled seven 20-point games, including a career-high 31 against The University of Mary Washington back on January 27.

The winner will travel to the York College of Pennsylvania on Thursday, February 22 to take on the No. 2 seeded Spartans. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
