Salisbury to host Southern Virginia University in CAC First Round

SALISBURY, Md. – The third ranked Salisbury University men's lacrosse program will host Southern Virginia University in the first round of the Capital Athletic Conference Men's Lacrosse Tournament on Saturday morning.

How We Got Here

The Sea Gulls earned the second seed in the CAC tournament as they posted a 5-1 mark in conference play with the lone blemish coming against current top seed York College of Pennsylvania. Salisbury scored a conference-best 107 goals in CAC play this season, averaging 17.83 goals per game while posting a 62.8 shot on goal percentage. The defense was equally as impressive as the unit held opponents to a 6.50 goals against average while causing another CAC-high 62 turnovers.

How They Got Here

Southern Virginia enters the 2019 tournament as the number seven seed. The Knights turned in a solid effort in conference play having four games decided by five goals or less, including a heartbreaking 17-16 defeat in triple overtime to the University of Mary Washington. Southern Virginia finished the regular season netting 79 goals in CAC play for an average of 13.17 goals per game while the team averaged a shot on goal percentage of 65.4.

Last Time Out

These two programs met exactly one week ago on this very field, with Salisbury getting the better of the visiting team, 26-9. Cross Ferrara finished the game with a team and career-best seven points, netting another team and career-high six goals. Ferrara opened the scoring by netting three goals in a minute and a half span to help push Salisbury out to a 7-1 lead after the opening frame. Brett Malamphy finished the game going 21-of-24 from the faceoff X while Matt O'Callaghan and Brad Apgar finished tied for the team-lead in caused turnovers with two apiece.  

Point Man

Josh Melton finished the regular season with a team-best 89 points while posting team-highs in both goals and assists with 51 and 38, respectively. Melton has been vital to the offensive output for Salisbury this season as he has registered at least one point in every game this season, including a career-best 11 versus State University of New York at Geneseo. He currently ranks second in the conference in each category, trailing only Zach Danneman of Southern Virginia.

Danneman the Man

Zach Danneman has been an offensive juggernaut for the Knights this season as he ranks first in the conference with 94 points and 76 goals. Danneman posted 12 games of four points or more, including three straight and four of five games with nine points. He also recorded seven goals in five games while registering a hat trick in 15 of 17 games this season. His 76 goals accounts for 29.9 percent of the team's total of 254 while his 94 points accounts for 24.4 percent of the team's total.

X Factor

The Salisbury offense has been jump started by senior faceoff specialist Malamphy, who has been dominant at the faceoff X. For the season Malamphy has posted a conference-best 248-of-346 mark at the X for a winning percentage of 71.6, while also scooping up a CAC-best 146 groundballs. Three times this season Malamphy won 21 plus faceoffs, including a season and career-high 23 at Washington College on April 13.

The winner of today's game will advance to the CAC Semifinal on Wednesday, May 1 and take on the winner of Christopher Newport University and the University of Mary Washington. A game time will be announced once the matchup is set.
