Defense dominates Christopher Newport; Melton achieves 100-season points

SALISBURY, Md. – The second-seeded Salisbury University men's lacrosse program defeated third seed Christopher Newport University in the Capital Athletic Conference Semifinals on Wednesday night to advance to the CAC Championship, 14-6.

The Sea Gulls (18-1) were anchored by a standout defensive performance, which saw the defensive unit hold the Captains (12-7) to one goal in the second half. After scoring with 2:41 left to play in the second quarter, to make it 9-5 at the break, Christopher Newport was held scoreless for nearly 24 minutes of game time not scoring again until the 10:45 mark of the fourth quarter.

The defense caused 13 turnovers led by Jackson Woodward, who totaled a team-best three, while Parker Stevens, Brad Apgar, and Kevin Murphy all tallied two apiece. Brandon Warren made the start in the net and earned his 14th win of the season behind an eight save performance on 14 shots on goal by the Captains.

On the offensive end the team was paced by junior attackman Josh Melton, who totaled four points to achieve the 100 point mark for the season. Melton fired home his first marker of the night less than two minutes into the contest as he finished off a pass from Tyler Snyder to push the advantage to 2-0. He struck again late in the opening frame as he netted his 55th goal of the year on an unassisted effort to extend the lead to 5-1.

Melton continued his strong offensive performance in the second quarter playing a part in two of the Sea Gulls' four goals in the frame. Melton found Pierre Armstrong, for his only assist of the night, on a man-up advantage before firing home his third marker of the contest less than a minute later to push the lead to 7-2.

He would close out the game for the maroon and gold as he netted the final marker of the contest for either side to record point 100 and push the score line final at 14-6.

Brett Malamphy was once again dominant from the faceoff X winning 20-of-23 faceoffs while scooping up a team-high 18 groundballs.

Salisbury will travel to face York College of Pennsylvania in the CAC championship on Saturday, May 4. The time of the game has yet to be announced.
