SALISBURY, Md. – After a successful week, the Salisbury University men's soccer team remains in the national rankings, as the National Soccer Coaches' Association of America and D3soccer.com released their weekly polls on Tuesday with SU earning the Nos. 25 and 16 ranks, respectively.
The Sea Gulls (8-0-3) remained undefeated this past week, tying Catholic University of America, 0-0, and defeating the University Mary Washington, 1-0, at home. The defensive front, anchored by seniors Jeff Byrnes, Kyle Westbrook, and junior goalkeeper Drew Staedeli, held strong in both games, not allowing any goals. Byrnes' strong effort earned him Capital Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors. Junior midfielder Michael Feeney led the offense this past week, scoring the game-winner against Mary Washington.
Christopher Newport University joins Salisbury as the only other team in the CAC that is in the top 25 in either poll. The Captains moved up three spots from last week and are ranked No. 12 in D3soccer.com, while moving up four spots to the No. 9 ranking in the NSCAA.
Messiah College remains at the top of both polls, boasting an overall record of 11-0. Kenyon College holds the No. 2 spot in both polls, with a 10-0 record.
The men are back in action on Wednesday, October 8, as Salisbury looks to protect its turf against St. Mary's College of Maryland in a CAC matchup. First touch is set for 4 p.m., at the SU Soccer Complex.
