GREENWOOD, Ind. – The Capital One Academic All-District soccer teams, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America, were announced on Thursday, and Salisbury University seniors Kyle Westbrook and Matt Greene and junior Drew Staedeli were named to the District 2 team.
Westbrook, a two-year captain for the Sea Gulls, has played a crucial role in the backline throughout the 2014 campaign, helping guide Salisbury to 0.42 goals-against average, good enough for top 10 in the country in the category. The Sea Gull defense has compiled 11 shutouts through 18 games, only allowing eight goals. Academically, the Salisbury, Maryland native is majoring in Biology, while minoring in Chemistry and Psychology, and maintains a 3.65 grade-point average.
Greene, a forward and captain for the Sea Gulls, opened the season in record-setting form, recording at least a point in six-consecutive matches. Through the six-game stretch, the Rockville, Maryland native found the back of the net five times and added five helpers for 15 points. Academically, Greene is majoring in Marketing, while minoring in English and Communication Arts, and maintains a 3.94 GPA.
Staedeli, a two-year starting goalkeeper for SU, is making his second appearance on the Academic All-District team, earning the honor in 2013. The final line of defense for SU, Staedeli has put together another great season donning the maroon and gold. Holding a 12-1-5 record while protecting the net, the Ellicott City, Maryland native has turned away 55 shots for a .877 save percentage, good enough for 10th best in the nation. He has only allowed seven balls across the goal line for a 0.38 goals-against average, placing him seventh in the country, while collecting 10 complete clean sheets. Academically, Staedeli is majoring in Accounting, while minoring in Finance, and maintains a 3.38 GPA.
To be eligible for nomination, a student-athlete must carry a minimum 3.30 GPA and be a starter or key reserve on his team. Being named to the All-District team, Westbrook, Greene and Staedeli are all eligible to be selected as an Academic All-American; that team will be announced later this month.
