Men record four top finishes; Gulls fall to St. Mary's

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The Salisbury University men and women's swimming team fell in the final meet of the regular season against conference-foe St. Mary's College of Maryland, as the men recorded a score of 121-84, and the women, 154-51. 

Men 

Sophomore Will Gough and freshman Okan Eyigor paced the men's squad, as the Gulls claimed four top finishes for the meet. Gough found gold in two individual races, while Eyigor claimed one. 

Gough started his day off in the 50-yard freestyle, racing for a time of 22.39 and nine points, while senior Chris Franklin came in for a close second place on a time of 22.66. The sophomore continued his successful day taking the 100-yard freestyle (49.57), giving him 18 total points for the meet through his two individual races. Franklin added a third-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle, finishing with a time of 51.25. The senior recorded seven points for the meet in his individual contests. 

Eyigor grabbed his top finish in the 200-yard backstroke, finishing with a time of 2:01.91 and nine points. Following behind the freshman for second place was senior James Gough with a time of 2:04.49 for four points. 

Junior Rich Ambrose, sophomores Jake Blazer and Gough, and Franklin finished the meet strong taking first place in the 400-yard freestyle relay for 11 points, out swimming second-place St. Mary's by over seven seconds for a time of 3:20.41. 

Women 

Freshman Victoria Radcliffe and sophomore Andria Moyer with seven and six points, respectively, paced the women's squad in individual events.  Radcliffe, falling just short of a top finish by a split second, claimed third place in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:00.97, as first place finished in 2:00.46. The freshman added a silver medal to her day racing for a time of 2:35.92 in the 200-yard breaststroke. 

Moyer raced for two third-place finishes for the meet. The sophomore started the day in the 50-yard freestyle, recording a time of 27.82. Several events later, Moyer claimed third in the 100-yard freestyle (1:00.56), while freshman Rachel Lisk grabbed fourth (1:01.35). 

In the 200-yard butterfly, SU claimed second, third and fourth place by freshman Layne Gable (2:23.96) and sophomores Nicki Schult (2:29.44) and Kayla Wumer (2:33.87), respectively, recording nine points for the three positions. 

The women's squad concluded the meet with a silver medal in the 400-yard freestyle relay led by Moyer, Lisk, freshman Claudia Guay, and sophomore Melissa Alessandrini, racing to a time of 4:07.94 for four points.

The Gulls now prepare for the Capital Athletic Conference men and women's swimming championships that will be held in St. Mary's City, Md., on February 21-23.
