Gulls break two more records in day two of CAC Swimming Championships

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. -- The Salisbury University men and women's swimming teams wrapped up day two of the Capital Athletic Conference Swimming Championships with another two school records broken.

Freshman Okan Eyigor added another program record into his resume, this time in the 100-yard butterfly. The record had stood since 1997 for Chris Bembenek with a time of 53.47. Eyigor raced in the preliminary in session three for a time of 52.74. Swimming in the final Saturday night, the freshman erased his earlier record by finishing with a time of 52.34 for a third-place finish.

Senior Chris Franklin raced alongside Eyigor in the 100-yard butterfly, swimming for an eighth-place finish (54.49).

Eyigor also qualified in the 100-yard backstroke, swimming for a fourth-place finish (53.22) in the preliminaries. Racing in the final, the Istanbul, Turkey native finished third with a time of 51.50 for his second bronze for the day.

Sophomore Sean DiFatta would place seventh in the 100-yard backstroke, swimming the event in 55.60.

Freshman Layne Gable competed in the 100-yard butterfly preliminary in session three to swim for a seventh-place qualifier with a time of 1:01.96. In session four during the finals, Gable would finish in eighth (1:02.71).

Freshman Victoria Radcliffe qualified sixth in the 200-yard freestyle preliminary with a time of 1:58.46. In the finals, she moved up two spots for a fourth-place finish, racing to a 1:56.84 time.

Junior Brittany Steele raced for a seventh-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:14.14.

The men would add two fourth-place finishes in the 200-yard medley relay and the 800-yard freestyle relay. In the 200-yard medley relay, Eyigor, Franklin, freshman Travis Maida, and sophomore Jake Blazer finished with a time of 1:40.21. In the 800-yard freestyle relay, senior James Gough, sophomore Will Gough, and freshman Eyigor and Scott Schirmer would post a time of 7:09.07. With that time, the men shatter their eighth record in two days. The previous record was set in 2012 with a time of 7:16.05.

The women would finish fifth in the 800-yard freestyle relay (8:23.35) behind sophomore Nicki Schult and sophomores Rachel Lisk, Gable and Radcliffe.

At the conclusion of the second day, the men sit in fourth with a total score of 265.5, while the women are placed fifth with 216 points. The University of Mary Washington sits atop both sides heading into the final day on Sunday.

The final day kicks off Sunday at 10 a.m. with preliminary events. Following the annual Senior Recognition celebration, the final six events will lead to the crowning of the 2014 championship teams at 6 p.m.
