Swimming looks to make a splash at CAC championships

SALISBURY, Md. – For the next three days, the Salisbury University men's and women's swimming teams will be competing in the annual Capital Athletic Conference Championships held at St. Mary's College of Maryland, which will begin Friday morning as a part of the three-day event.

The championships will begin at 10 a.m. on Friday morning starting with trials and ending with finals that evening. Saturday will begin at 10 a.m. again and proceed into the evening hours. Sunday's events will start slightly early at 9 a.m. that morning and finish around 4 p.m. that afternoon.

Last year at the Championships

Both the men's and women's squads had a successful CAC Championship meet last season, breaking three school records between the two teams. The men finished second overall with a total of 491 points, which was the men's best finish ever at the CAC Championships. The women captured a third place finish earning 439 points overall.

Leading the men

On the men's side, Salisbury will be led by senior Okan Eyigor and sophomores Peter Moyer and Andrew Ward. Eyigor leads the men's side with 17 first-place finishes this season and was a Second-Team All-CAC selection last season. Eyigor was also credited this season with breaking the record in the 100-meter backstroke, posting a blistering time of 59.33 seconds. Moyer, also had a prosperous second year for the Sea Gulls, notching 16 individual victories and recording a personal new pool record in the 200-meter freestyle, posting a time of 1:58.08. Ward, a Second-Team All-CAC winner in 2016 built on his success from last season notching six first-place and three second-place finishes for the year.

Leading the women

On the women's side, the gulls are led by seniors Victoria Radcliffe and Layne Gable, junior Bizu Baldinazzo and freshman Emma Tarnosky. Radcliffe had another record-breaking year for the Sea Gulls, breaking the Maggs Physical Activities Center pool record in the 400-IM (5:22.02). Radcliffe also has a team-high of 19 victories on the season. Baldinazzo stood out in both the freestyle and butterfly events, capturing seven first-place and five second-place finishes for the season. Gable finished out her senior season notching six first-place and five second-place finishes in the butterfly and IM events. Tarnosky made a splash in her debut season as she recorded six first-place and eight second-place finishes for the maroon and gold.

Last Time Out

Both men's and women's swimming earned victories in their final meets of the season. With the women's 156-104 victory over St. Mary's College of Maryland Head Coach Jill Stephenson earned her 100th victory for the maroon and gold. Radcliffe earned three victories on the afternoon. She captured wins in the 200-meter freestyle, 100-meter freestyle, and 400-meter individual medley.

The men defeated the Sea Hawks by the final score of 148-112 to earn their fourth victory of the season. Eyigor led the men's side with three victories on the afternoon. He claimed wins in the 100-meter backstroke, 200-meter backstroke, and 100-meter butterfly.  

Up Next

After the CAC Championships, the Sea Gulls will look to see if swimmers will qualify and compete in the NCAA Championships, which will be held in Shenandoah, Texas. The dates of the NCAA Championships are March 18-21.
