SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 18 Salisbury University softball team has begun its journey to Newport News, Va., in preparation for the first round of the 2012 NCAA Division III Softball Championship.
The third-seeded Sea Gulls (35-5) will take the field on Thursday, May 10, against sixth-seeded Ferrum College (35-12) in their opening contest of regional action. Salisbury holds an all-time 6-1 record against the Panthers. The last time these two teams met was in the 2005 NCAA Softball Division III Championship first round where the Gulls slid past the Panthers, 1-0, in their first game of the tournament.
Salisbury will then play either Farmingdale State College or host Christopher Newport University on Friday, May 11.
All games will be available to watch online via live stats and through video or with twitter updates.
In an effort to go green, the NCAA has limited the practice of producing hard copy tournament programs. Beginning this year, the programs will still be produced, but for select championships, including softball, they will only be made available electronically, free of charge.
The electronic versions of the program for this week's tournament will be available at www.ncaa.com/diiisoftball. At each championship site posters with QR (Quick Response) codes will be posted, allowing fans to bring up the championship program on their properly equipped smart phones.
