FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Capital Athletic Conference released its weekly softball awards on Monday and Salisbury University earned a clean sweep as Jillian Jones and Shannon Powell each garnered conference honors.
Jones was named Player of the Week for the first time this season as she turned in a stellar week to help Salisbury to a 4-0 record. In the Sea Gulls' first game of a doubleheader against Penn State University Harrisburg, Jones belted her first collegiate home run, a three-run shot, to put the game out of reach. In the second game of the double dip, Salisbury needed a seventh-inning run to tie the game and force extras. In the bottom of the ninth inning Jones came to the plate and moved the winning run up, scoring on the next at-bat for the 5-4 walk-off victory. Jones finished the week with eight hits with two doubles and two home runs, eight RBI, and a batting average of .615.
Meanwhile, Powell earned Pitcher of the Week accolades as she appeared in all four games for the maroon and gold. Powell made one start and came out of the bullpen three times to earn all four wins. She totaled 18 innings pitched, as she surrendered just one unearned run to give her an ERA of 0.00. Powell struck out four batters and gave up just 14 hits in the four appearances.
Salisbury returns to action on Wednesday, April 3 when it travels to the University of Mary Washington. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
