BOSTON – Salisbury University track & field junior pole vaulter Kyleigh Dumas competed in her first National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III Indoor Track & Field National Championships on Friday night at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center.
"It honestly was a great experience," Dumas said. "This was my goal at the beginning of the season, so being able to just attend such a big meet was awesome. Competing against these other girls really makes me even more motivated to get to their level and hopefully get to an All-American status."
Dumas finished 16th overall, improving one place on her original seeding, clearing the bar at a height of 11' 9.75." The height is now the second highest height Dumas has posted this indoor season.
"Kyleigh has had a great indoor season," Head Coach Jim Jones said. "She has 'raised the bar' for herself and the program this year. She again broke her own school record several times, broke the CAC meet record and CAC record, and on top of all of that she qualified for the NCAA championship for the first time in her career finishing one place higher than she was ranked coming into the championship."
For the season Dumas broke the school record on two different occasions, including setting her ultimate seeding height of 12' 2.5" at the 2019 Eastern College Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships. She also set a new Capital Athletic Conference meet record when she cleared the bar at a height of 11' 4.5" at the CAC indoor track & field championships.
"I am very proud of what she has accomplished this indoor season and what she will continue to do in the future," Jones said.
"This experience has helped motivate me even more for the outdoor season because I'm ready to get on the podium at outdoor nationals," Dumas said. "I'm ready to make some changes to my vault and hopefully get a personal record in outdoor."
Dumas and the Sea Gulls return to action on Thursday, March 14 when they travel to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina to compete in the Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational as part of their outdoor schedule.
