UNION, N.J. – Freshman Anna Hackett scored a game-high-tying 17 points on 6-for-12 shooting but the Salisbury University women's basketball team dropped Kelly Lewandowski's debut as a head coach to No. 24 Kean University, 71-50, in the Cougar Classic at Harwood Arena on Saturday.
Naimah Clemons also scored 17 points and added 10 steals and five rebounds for Kean (2-0).
Junior Katie McGahagan came off the bench to notch a double-double for Salisbury (0-1) with 12 points and 10 rebounds as the Sea Gulls shot 19-of-47 (40.4 percent) from the floor.
Noel Mathis recorded 16 points, registered nine steals and added five assists for the Cougars, who opened with 10 of the game's first 12 points over 3:43.
The Sea Gulls closed to within four points twice – on a three-pointer by Lexi Kebetz that made it 11-7 and a Cinthia Ruiz jumper to cut the edge to 13-9 – but that was as close as SU got the rest of the game. Kean pushed its advantage to 37-18 by halftime.
The Cougar lead grew to as big as 37 points, 61-24, midway through the second half on a layup by Clemons, but SU outscored Kean, 26-10, over the remainder of the game, while shooting 50 percent from the field, for the final margin.
The Cougars forced the Sea Gulls into 48 turnovers, converting them into 47 points and outrebounded SU, 50-42.
SU closes the tournament playing Oneonta State on Sunday at 11 a.m.
