SALISBURY, Md. – Junior Katie McGahagan led all players with 16 points and 17 rebounds as the Salisbury University women's basketball team defeated Trinity (D.C.) University, 59-35, in non-conference action at Maggs Physical Activities Center on Wednesday.
McGahagan shot 7-for-11 from the field and secured 12 defensive rebounds in collecting her team-leading third double-double of the season. Classmate KC Curran added 12 points, five rebounds and four assists for Salisbury (9-7).
The Sea Gulls opened a 15-6 advantage just over seven minutes into the game as McGahagan and Curran tallied four points each to get the Sea Gulls off and running. Senior Milan Dry capped the spurt with a three-point play at the 7:44 mark.
Trinity (9-3) shaved the Salisbury edge to 19-11 when Dominique Meriedy hit a free throw with 8:45 remaining before freshman Lexi Kebetz drilled a three-pointer to give SU a double-digit lead and jumpstart an 11-6 run that pushed the lead to 30-17 at the break.
A McGahagan layup from junior Cinthia Ruiz with 14:15 left gave the Gulls their largest lead of the night at 45-17 and the defense limited the Tigers to just 18 points the rest of the game.
Kebetz finished with 11 points in 16 minutes while freshman Anna Hackett had seven points and five of SU's 19 assists.
Salisbury outrebounded Trinity, 43-30, and scored 19 points off of the Tigers' 23 turnovers.
Thamar Polynice and Christa Burgess (six points) and Charity Blackwell (six rebounds) paced Trinity in the loss.
The Sea Gulls jump back into Capital Athletic Conference play, traveling to Stevenson University on Wednesday. Opening tip is scheduled for 6 p.m., at Owings Mills Gym.
