OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Freshman Anna Hackett scored a game-high 17 points as the Salisbury University women's basketball team topped Stevenson University, 59-47, to lengthen its winning streak to three games on Wednesday at Owings Mills Gym.
Junior Katie McGahagan scored 12 points and pulled down 17 rebounds for her second consecutive double-double as SU (10-7, 7-2 CAC) matched its longest winning streak of the season.
Trailing, 7-4, midway through the first half, Salisbury engineered an 18-1 run to take firm control. Freshman Lexi Kebetz hit a jumper to get things started and junior Cinthia Ruiz followed with a bucket to give the Sea Gulls their first lead of the game, 8-7, with 10:02 to play. Ruiz had all eight of her points in the stretch, which ended with SU leading 22-8 when senior Meghan Dunn knocked down a jumper with 5:22 left.
Salisbury took a 29-14 advantage into the break.
The Gulls' lead grew to 33-14 a minute into the second period on a layup by senior Milan Dry but Stevenson (6-12, 2-8) used a 14-6 spurt, capped by a Daniela Poss jumper in the paint at the 10:13 mark, to move within 12 at 39-27.
SU, though, ran off 11 of the next 13 points to take its largest lead of the game at 50-29 with 5:30 remaining. Senior KC Curran led the charge, scoring five in that span, including a three-pointer, and later, a jumper to close the run.
The Mustangs cut to the lead to eight at 52-44 with 2:34 left when Kayla Kelly had a steal and layup but that was as close as Stevenson got the rest of the way.
Hackett shot 4-for-13 from the field and 8-of-10 from the line while collecting four steals, three assists and two rebounds. Curran tallied eight points and Dunn had six points, four steals and three rebounds. Junior Nicole Sisco picked up three of Salisbury's five blocked shots for the game.
Sam Murray led Stevenson with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
SU returns to Maggs Physical Activities Center on Saturday, hosting Wesley College at 6 p.m.
