SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury women's basketball team's season-long four-game winning streak came to an end in a 54-52 loss to Marymount (Va.) University in Capital Athletic Conference action at Maggs Physical Activities Center on Wednesday.
SU (11-8, 9-3 CAC) erased a seven-point Saints' lead with 12:22 to play, using a 10-0 run to take just its second lead of the game at 39-36 on a jumper by junior Nicole Sisco. The Sea Gulls built their advantage to 45-38 on a quick 5-2 run before Marymount battled its way back.
Katelyn Fischer drained a rainbow three-pointer to pull the visitors within 47-45 with 2:08 left. Freshman Anna Hackett responded with a three-point play with 1:15 remaining. Julie Tomesheski and Sam Spencer then sandwiched a layup and three-pointer around a junior Katie McGahagan basket with 27 seconds left.
On the next possession, Fischer drove the baseline for a layup and drew contact with 16 seconds left, hitting the ensuing free throw for a 53-52 lead and MU (8-12, 5-6) held on for the win.
McGahagan led all scorers with 19 points and pulled down a team-high nine rebounds for Salisbury. Hackett chipped in with 11 points, nine assists and three steals.
Marymount opened a 19-11 lead at the 7:45 mark of the first half when Tynisha Parks grabbed an offensive rebound and put it back up and in.
The Sea Gulls, though, closed the period on a 10-5 spurt, using four points from junior McGahagan and three from freshman Whitney Kolakowski.
Fischer paced the Saints with 18 points and Tomesheski posted a double-double of 10 points and 12 rebounds.
SU travels to play the University of Mary Washington Saturday at 4 p.m.
