SAN JUAN, P.R. – The Salisbury University women's basketball team finished its holiday road trip to the San Juan Shootout with a 70-53 loss against No. 11 Montclair State University at the Mario Morales Coliseum, Sunday afternoon in Puerto Rico.
Junior Melanie Mocniak led the Sea Gull attack with 12 points, her highest total in maroon and gold. Mocniak went 5-for-8 from the field in 23 minutes of action. The forward from Annapolis, Md., also grabbed a team-high six rebounds.
Junior Sarah Seipp was the only other Salisbury (4-5) player to reach double digits, as she netted 10 points in the contest. The Gaithersburg, Md., native netted each of her points in the first half.
Salisbury played the Red Hawks tight, going into the halftime break with the score tied at 36 apiece. Montclair (10-1) came out strong in the second half, eventually pulling away for the victory. Salisbury hit 38.3 percent of its shots for the contest.
For the contest, junior Anna Hackett netted four points and dished out a game-high six assists.
Sophomore Julia McLaughlin chipped in eight points for the Sea Gulls.
Nicosia Henry led the Red Hawks with a game-high 21 points, with Melissa Tobie adding 18.
Salisbury will be back in action stateside after the new year, taking on Penn State-Harrisburg on Saturday, Jan. 4. That contest is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. The Sea Gulls will be back at the Maggs Physical Activities Center on Wednesday, Jan. 8, hosting Capital Athletic Conference rival University of Mary Washington. Tipoff for that contest is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
