Women’s basketball dominates visiting York in CAC opening round

SALISBURY, Md. – The third-seeded Salisbury University women's basketball team defeated York College of Pennsylvania in the first round of the Capital Athletic Conference tournament Tuesday night at Maggs Physical Activities Center, 67-48.

The Sea Gulls (17-9) came out on fire in the first quarter starting the game on a 16-4 run, which was sparked by a Megan Konig triple just 26 seconds into the contest and capped by a Konig jumper with 3:40 remaining. The Spartans (11-14) continued to fight, however, scoring the final six points of the opening frame to trail 16-10.

Salisbury continued to find its groove on offense in the second quarter with an 11-3 run over the first five minutes. The charge was led with four points from Kaylyn French, while Jada Welbon added a triple to help put the Sea Gulls up, 27-13. York continued to keep the game within reach behind a 7-2 run to close the half trailing 29-20.

Kylie Webb and Courtney Brigham tallied four points each to begin the third quarter with an 8-0 Salisbury run and build a 37-20 lead, but York continued to stay within striking distance with an 11-7 run of its own in the final six minutes to trail 44-31.

The maroon and gold kept its foot on the gas despite the comfortable lead, outscoring York 23-17 in the fourth quarter. Five different Sea Gulls contributed points in the final frame, including seven more from Konig and five from Kaylee Otlowski.

Konig tied her best scoring output of the season with a game-high 19 points. Three other Sea Gulls reached double digits, with French contributing 12 points, Otlowski 11, and Webb 10. Otlowski had a team-high eight rebounds, while Welbon led all Sea Gulls with three assists.

With the win, Salisbury will take to the road to face No. 2 seed Southern Virginia University, which defeated No. 7 seed Penn State University-Harrisburg on Tuesday evening, 69-62, to advance to the semifinal round. Opening tip is set for 7 p.m.
