YORK, Pa. – The Capital Athletic Conference released its 2014 Women's Lacrosse Coaches Preseason poll and Salisbury University is placed at the top of the list, the league announced Thursday.
The 13-time reigning conference champion Sea Gulls received eight first-place votes out of a possible nine (coaches may not vote for their own team) and 64 points to lead the CAC into the season as the unanimous No. 1 selection. Coming in at No. 2 and notching the final first-place vote is York College of Pennsylvania, who SU defeated in the 2013 conference championship, 13-5.
Newcomer Christopher Newport University makes its way into No. 3 with 52 points, as the Sea Gulls defeated the Captains twice last season. In their final meeting, in the NCAA tournament, Salisbury recorded a 17-5 victory to advance to the quarterfinals.
No. 4 University of Mary Washington and No. 5 St. Mary's College of Maryland round out the top five with 40 and 37 points, respectively. The remainder of the poll stands as No. 6 Marymount (Va.) University (31 points), No. 7 Frostburg State University (22 points), No. 8 Wesley College (16 points), and No. 9 Southern Virginia University (eight points).
