BALTIMORE – Lacrosse season is just around the corner and the reigning two-time national champion Salisbury University women's lacrosse team has its eyes on a three-peat, entering the 2015 campaign as the top team in the country. But that's not the only top recognition the Sea Gulls bring into the new year, as senior midfielder Bethany Baer has been announced by Lacrosse Magazine as the Division III Preseason Player of the Year.
Baer has put together quite a resume at Salisbury the past three seasons, recording 113 goals and 42 assists for 155 points. Rarely coming off the field, the Westminster, Maryland native already sits second in program history with 133 draw controls, just 73 behind the top spot. She also is in seventh place in groundballs with 107.
Last season, Baer helped guide the Sea Gulls through the national tournament to their third title, with 14 goals and three assists for 17 points through five games. While winning 21 draw controls, scooping 13 groundballs and causing five turnovers, the captain was ultimately named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player.
Through her career thus far, Baer has been named a two-time First-Team All-American, and in 2014, the Midfielder of the Year by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches' Association. For Lacrosse Magazine, she was named Preseason Midfielder of the Year last season before earning All-American status at the conclusion of the year.
Baer and the Sea Gulls begin the season on Saturday, February 21, as Salisbury welcomes No. 17 Stevenson University to Sea Gull Stadium for the season opener. First draw is set for 3 p.m.
