INDIANAPOLIS – The field of 38 has been laid out Sunday night for the 2015 NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Tournament, and the No. 8 Salisbury University women's lacrosse team will host No. 12 Hamilton College on Sunday, May 10 at Sea Gull Stadium. First draw is set for 1 p.m.
The Sea Gulls (14-3) earned the Capital Athletic Conference's automatic qualifier into the big dance this past weekend after a 6-3 victory over York College of Pennsylvania. The championship is the 15th in program history and 13th in a row.
Punching its ticket into the national tournament is no surprise for Salisbury, as it holds quite a resume over the past 16 years, making an appearance in all but one. Of the 15 trips, the Gulls have advanced to championship weekend 10 times. Reaching the final game of the season seven times, they hoisted the national championship trophy in 2010, 2013 and 2014.
The Continentals (11-5) were awarded an at-large bid into the national tournament after falling in the quarterfinals of the New England Small College Athletic Conference tournament to Tufts University, 7-6. This is Hamilton's eighth appearance in the NCAA tournament, the first since 2011, earning a national title in 2008.
The squads have faced each other four times dating back to 2000, three of the meetings being in the tournament. The first meeting in 2000 was in the second round with the Sea Gulls taking an 18-15 victory, before falling in 2008 in the semifinals, 11-10. Salisbury would claim redemption in a regular-season matchup in Texas the following season, 12-9, before taking a 7-6 decision over the Continentals in 2010 in the national championship for the program's first title.
The road to Philadelphia and a potential three-peat as national champion begins on Sunday at Sea Gull Stadium. The winner of the second-round matchup will advance to regional weekend on May 16 and 17, in hopes to punch its ticket to championship weekend at PPL Park in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on May 23 and 24.
