The second ranked Salisbury University women’s lacrosse team opened the NCAA tournament with a 19-11 win over visiting Meredith College in second-round action on Sunday afternoon. Gabrielle Mongno helped the Sea Gulls outscore the Avenging Angels 13-5 in the first half with four goals in the opening frame. Mongno scored two of Salisbury’s first three goals and ended the half with a marker nine seconds before the break, capping a 7-0 run for the maroon and gold. Emma Skoglund joined Mongno with five goals on the day, tallying two in the first half and three in the second. Skoglund notched the last three goals of the game for Salisbury, including two off assists from Lindsey Wagner. The freshman added two caused turnovers, two groundballs, and one draw control in the win. Wagner finished the afternoon with a team-high three assists to go along with this unassisted goal in the second half. With the win, Salisbury advances to the third round of the NCAA tournament to take on Denison University. A game time and location will be announced early this week.
