YORK, Pa. – Gabby Mongno notched the game-winner in double overtime to lift the sixth ranked Salisbury University women's lacrosse team over ninth ranked York College of Pennsylvania, 10-9, in a battle of two top-10 teams in Capital Athletic Conference play on Wednesday.
The Spartans (10-5, 4-1 CAC) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first 10 minutes of the game, but the Sea Gulls (13-2, 4-0 CAC) cut the deficit to one midway through the first half with goals from Gianna Demato and Mongno.
After York pushed its advantage back to two, Demato tallied her second of the day with 9:22 remaining in the first half to make it 4-3. Alexis Strobel then found Emma Skoglund with 1:34 to play in the half to tie the game 4-4 heading into the break.
York scored the first two goals of the second half before Strobel made it 6-5 just under 14 minutes in. Demato then evened the score and Courtney Fegan gave the Sea Gulls their first lead of the game with exactly 13 minutes to go in regulation.
The Spartans rattled off three straight goals to regain the lead, 9-7, with 9:10 left in the second half. The Sea Gulls rallied back to send the game to overtime, however, as Demato punched in her fourth goal of the game and Skoglund tallied her second on a free position goal with 4:49 left.
After a scoreless first overtime period, Mongno scored the game-winner with just 19 seconds left on the clock in the second overtime, converting on a man-up opportunity off an assist from Taylor Poore.
Skye Graham made a season-high 13 saves in net to lead Salisbury to its sixth straight win, all of which she has held opponents to single digits in goals.
