The women’s soccer team hosted long-time rival and No. 8 ranked Christopher Newport University on Wednesday, October 18th, in a battle for first place in the Capital Athletic Conference. The Captains controlled the ball early, getting off its best shot of the half in the 23rd minute, but goalkeeper Hope Knussman made a diving save on a shot that was bending towards the far-left corner of the net. The Gulls’ best opportunity in the first half came when Dana Gordon served an upfield pass that split the defense before finding Ruthie Lucas, but Lucas’ shot sailed just high of the net, leaving both teams scoreless at the half. Salisbury looked to hold its momentum to start the second half, but it was Christopher Newport that struck first in the 50th minute off a redirection following a corner kick. The Captains doubled their lead 15 minutes later after a race to the ball, which led to a shot that would skirt past Knussman before ricocheting off the right post and back into the left side of the net for the two-nothing lead. The Sea Gulls made a handful of pushes over the final 20 minutes, including two shots by Liliana Caceres and another by Cristina Narron, But the Captains held on as time expired, handing the maroon and gold its first conference loss of the season. The team returns to action on Saturday, October 21, when it travels to Frostburg State to participate in an important contest that could ultimately decide conference playoff seeding. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
