Women’s soccer team falls to Virginia Wesleyan

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University women's soccer team fell to Virginia Wesleyan University on Tuesday afternoon at Sea Gull Soccer Stadium, 2-0.

The Marlins (2-1) took control of the ball early and created pressure on offense, recording four corner kicks and four shots in the first 15 minutes of the game.

The Sea Gulls (1-2) began to steal some momentum around the 20-minute mark and began pushing the ball forward and finding their shots, but Virginia Wesleyan was able to make the most of an opportunity following a corner kick in the 32nd minute to put them up, 1-0. The ball crossed from the right corner into the left side of the box, where Reina Araujo managed to jut the ball back in front of the net to teammate Mia Meinhardt, who redirected the ball into the left side of the net.

The Marlins doubled their lead a little over 10 minutes later. The second goal began on a breakaway by Carleigh Van Reenan, who knocked a shot past Goalkeeper Emma Hill, but center back Kayla Homeyer raced back and knocked the ball away before crossing the goal line. However, Van Reenan stayed with the ball and was able to get in front of the clearing attempt to drive the ball into the empty net.

In the second half, the Sea Gulls managed to lock down the Marlins' offense and kept the ball out of their own net, but were unable to capitalize on any of their own attempts and get themselves back into the game.

Senior forward Liz Fenton led the Sea Gulls with three shots, including two on goal, one of which sailed over the Marlins goalkeeper before ricocheting off the cross bar and back in to play.

The team will take to the road for the first time this season when it heads to Lexington, Virginia this weekend to compete in the Washington and Lee Invitational. Its first matchup with take place against Bridgewater (Va.) College on Saturday, September 8 at 2:30 p.m.
