Women's Soccer upset in CAC Tournament by York

SALISBURY, Md. – The top-seeded Salisbury University women's soccer team was knocked out of the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) Tournament by the fourth-seeded York Spartans, 2-1, on Wednesday in the CAC semifinals.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Salisbury got the scoring started early in the eighth minute of the game when Juliana Looney won possession of the ball after a throw-in and found the head of Brooke Rossiter in the box to take the early 1-0 lead.
  • Looney looked to have doubled Salisbury's lead in the 18th minute on a long-range shot but a Salisbury player at the last minute was called offside and the goal was taken off the board. 
  • In the 39th minute, York's Anna Morton had a breakaway chance at goal, but Emma Hill made a diving save and the ball ricocheted off the post. 
  • In the 49th minute, York's Georgia Gillcrist tied the game at one on a failed clearance by the Salisbury defense on a corner kick.
  • York took the lead in the 78th minute when Moriah Morton found Ryan Hussey who was able to get through the pressure of Hill and a Sea Gull defender to score the second goal for the Spartans.
  • York parked the bus for the rest of the game as Salisbury couldn't find the goal to force overtime.

  • The Salisbury defense held York to only four shots, all of which were on goal.

  • With their 13-3-3 record, Salisbury will wait for a chance to be an at-large team in the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament. The field will be announced on Monday, Nov. 11 at 1 p.m.
