Sea Gulls start new year against McDaniel; men pick up first win of 2013

WESTMINSTER, Md. - The Salisbury University men's and women's swim teams kicked off the new year with a meet at McDaniel College on Saturday; the men defeated the Green Terror, 53-42, while the women fell, 58-36.

The Sea Gulls started the meet off strong in the 400-yard medley relay. The women swam first, and the team of senior Meghan Donovan, sophomore Brittany Steele, senior Sarah Ault and freshman Nikki Schult posted a time of 4:32.13 to claim second.

The men's team of junior James Gough, freshman Will Gough, sophomore Daniel Keller and senior Eric Robichaud followed with a first-place finish (4:16.58).

Four different men's swimmers placed first in individual events during the meeting, starting with junior Chris Franklin with a time of 22.06 in the 50-yard freestyle.

Keller (100-yard butterfly in 55.37), Robichaud (100-yard freestyle in 51.11) and James Gough (100-yard backstroke in 57.52) all had first-place finishes, as well.

Ault and Steele led the women's team, as Ault placed first in the 100-yard butterfly (1:03.75) and Steele finished first in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:19.01).

Both teams finished the day by finishing first in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Freshman Melissa Alessandrini, senior Christine Cook, freshman Andria Moyer and junior Julie Mstowski finished in a time of 4:13.21 for the women, and Robichaud and sophomores Eric Gillies, Philip Kuldell and Rich Ambrose finished in a time of 3:33.04 for the men.

The Sea Gulls will be in action again, as they return home on Saturday for a Capital Athletic Conference meet with the University of Mary Washington at 1 p.m.
