Gulls grounded by Cardinals on opening day

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Salisbury University men's and women's swimming teams took on The Catholic University of America in their season opener Saturday afternoon. Both teams suffered defeat as the men lost 147-115 and the women fell 170-92.


Senior Okan Eiygor started the day off with two first-place finishes, one in the 100-yd back stroke with a time of 54.88, and also in the 200-yd back stroke, posting a time of 2:03.55.

Eiygor would also finished first in the 200-yd medley relay with the help from fellow team mates Tyler MaggioStephen Arcidiacono and Jake Blazer, notching a time of 1:40.2. Later on, Eiygor teamed up with Andrew WardScott Schirmer and Blazer, to earn a second spot in a very close 200-yd free style relay, posting a time of 1:31.52, which was less than a second behind the first place time of 1:30.39.

Outside of the relay events, Blazer would also go on to collect an individual first place spot in the 50-yd freestyle, recording a time of 22.95.

Sophomore Pete Moyer recorded a first place finish in the 200-yd freestyle, notching a time of 1:49.17. He would also place third in the 200-yd breast stroke recording a time of 2:24.86.


On the women's side, Senior Victoria Radcliffe tallied two first-place finishes in both the 200-yd. freestyle, recording a time of 2:01.02, and again in the 200-yd. IM, posting a time of 2:17.56. Together Radcliffe and fellow team mates Bizunesh BaldinazzoLayne Gable and Madison Tinus placed second in a nail-biting 200-yd. medley relay that recorded a time of 1:57.97, less than a second behind a first place time of 1:56.45.

Baldinazzo would round off her day with an individual first place selection in the 50-yd. freestyle recording a time of 26.57.

Gable would also go on to place second in both the 200-yd. fly, recording a time of 2:21.09, and again in the 100-yd. fly with a time of 1:03.58. She would miss out on a first place bid by a hundredth of a second.

The Sea Gulls will open up Capital Athletic Conference play next Saturday, October 29, when they travel to take on the Spartans from York College of Pennsylvania. The meet is set to begin at 1 p.m.
