Sea Gulls fall to Cardinals to open season

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University men's and women's swimming teams hosted the Catholic University of America to open their seasons on Saturday afternoon. The Sea Gull teams fell in both contests with the men losing, 104-63 and the women falling, 149-55.


The first victory came for the men in the 200-meter freestyle event, when Peter Moyer outswam Catholic's Sam Hicks by a little over a second to record a time of 2:00.46. Moyer would also finish first in the 400 meter freestyle with a time of 4:22.95.

The men were also victorious in the 50-meter freestyle. This time, it was Josh Brown who led the charge, beating out Catholic's Matthew Mahon by a hair with a time of 24.04 seconds.

The men finished the day on a high note by coming away with a victory in the 400-meter freestyle relay. Salisbury got off to a slow start in the race, but rallied back when Brown and teammate Richard Baker overcame their opponents in the final eight laps, capturing a time of 3:42.07.


One the women's side, Angela Barzanti captured the team's only victory, in the 400-meter freestyle event, finishing just ahead of Catholic's Emily Messina with a time of 4:57.76.

The women were able to score a number of second-place finishes on the day to help boost their final score. Jordyn Rowe earned a second-place finish in the 200-meter individual medley with a time of 2:44.83. Emma Tarnosky also captured a second-place finish in the 100-meter backstroke, clocking in at 1:11.15. Olivia Edsall also came in second in the 100-meter breaststroke, with a time of 1:25.62.

Both the men's and women's teams return to action next Saturday, October 28, when they host York College of Pennsylvania for the first Capital Athletic Conference meet of the season.  The event is set to begin at 1 p.m.
