Swimming teams set two school records in first day of championships

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - The Salisbury University men's and women's swimming teams kicked off a long weekend with days one and two of the 2018 Capital Athletic Conference championships at St. Mary's College of Maryland on Thursday and Friday, setting two school records along the way.

The men's team got off to a hot start on Thursday evening, finishing the 800-yard freestyle relay in third place and setting a new school record with it. Andrew Ward, Jake Ryan, Richard Baker, and Peter Moyer combined to finish with a time of 7:04.88.

Josh Brown led all men in the 50-yard freestyle preliminary on Friday morning, earning a time of 21.17 seconds. He then earned a spot atop the podium later that evening by finishing first in the conference with a time of 21.01 seconds.

Moyer finished in sixth place in the 500-yard freestyle during morning preliminaries, with a time of 4:48.17. He then bested his own time during the finals Friday evening, capturing a time of 4:41.92 and finishing fourth in the conference.

Kyle Russell set a new school record in the 50-yard breaststroke during time trials, recording a time of 28.89 seconds.


On the women's side, Emma Tarnosky came in 12th place in the 200-yard individual medley, with a time of 2:20.19 and shaving off over six seconds from her regular season best time of 2:26.21.

Jordyn Rowe finished in 13th place right behind her teammate with a time of 2:21.05, besting her own regular season top time of 2:25.81.

Angela Barzanti finished the 500-yard freestyle in 12th place with a time of 5:30.66, and improvement on her regular season best time of 5:42.04

In the evening, the women's 200-yard freestyle relay team, comprised of Rowe, Tarnosky, Ali Johnston, and Briya Cohen, finished with a time of 1:46.10. The new time shaved nearly six seconds off the team's previous regular season mark.

Tarnosky, Barzanti, Johnston, and Rowe would team up later in the evening for the 400-yard medley relay, this time shaving off nearly 15 seconds from their previous best to finish with a time of 4:20.11

The teams will return to the pool on Saturday at 10 a.m. for day three of the championships. Preliminary events will include the 100-yard butterfly, 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard breaststroke, and 100-yard backstroke.
