NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Salisbury University women's tennis team picked up a 7-2 win at Christopher Newport University on Thursday afternoon.
The Sea Gulls (5-6) swept the three doubles matches before picking up four singles wins to take down the No. 15 ranked team in the Atlantic South Region.
Salisbury's top doubles pair of junior Jillian Poppe and freshman Roxanne Alban picked up their third-straight win, taking down the Captains' top team, 8-2. The Sea Gulls also got 8-6 wins from their No. 2 doubles pair of junior Elaina Iosue and freshman Katie Youlios and the No. 3 team of junior Victoria Handlin and freshman Allison Lutz.
Handlin earned the most dominant singles win, with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 5 singles while Poppe, at No. 1, and Lutz, at No. 6, each allowed their CNU (8-4) opponents just seven games in their straight-set wins.
Iosue had the toughest road to victory on Thursday, needing three sets to dispose of Kim Morrissett, at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 1-6, 6-2.
With their wins, Handlin, Poppe, Lutz and Iosue each improved their current winning streaks to three matches.
The Sea Gulls, ranked No. 17 in the region, will be back in action on Saturday, March 31, when they travel to No. 21 University of Mary Washington. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
