Tennis teams sweep Goucher; Men's 9-0, Women's 8-1

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University tennis teams moved indoors to avoid the rain to defeat Goucher College, Friday at the Indoor Tennis Center. The men's team won its match 9-0, with the women's team taking a 8-1 decision.

Men: Salisbury 9, Goucher 0

Salisbury (2-1) started strong, leading 3-0 after doubles play. The Sea Gulls picked up their first point with an 8-1 win for brothers Shane Gunther, a senior, and sophomore Shanon Gunther. Junior Daniel Albers and sophomore Eric Spangler finished next, an 8-2 victory.

Sophomore Matthew McGaffney and freshman Grant Hudson rounded out doubles play with an 8-2 win.

From the No. 1 position, Spangler picked up the first singles point of the match, defeating Seth Hoesman 6-0, 6-1. Senior Paul Berryman secured the match for Salisbury from the No. 3 position with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Midori Fujitani.

Shanon Gunther, at the No. 2 spot, was forced to tiebreakers in both sets, as he bested David Spivey 7-6 (9-7), 7-6 (7-2).

Freshman Alex Stevenson picked up the first victory of his collegiate career, from the No. 5 position, winning 6-0, 6-2 over Pat Murnin. Hudson also picked up the first win of his career, a 6-3, 6-1 decision over Chad Resnik.

Goucher (1-4) picked up its lone set to wrap-up the meet, when John Bescoby defeated freshman Michael Popielski6-3, in the first set in the No. 6 matchup. The Westminster, Md., native would rally back to take the second set, 6-1. The match was settled by a first-to-ten-point tiebreaker, which Popielski would take 10-6 to pick up his first collegiate victory.

Women: Salisbury 8, Goucher 1

The same as its male counterparts, the Salisbury (2-2) women's team started strong, taking each of the doubles matches. The Sea Gulls picked up the first point of the match when junior Sam Babo and freshman Claudia Lohn picked up an 8-3 win.

Sophomore Natalie Savage and junior Roxanne Alban picked up an 8-2 decision for Salisbury's second point. Juniors Allison Lutz and Katie Youlios finished doubled play with an 8-3 win.

Alban, playing in the No. 2 spot, swept Goucher's Alex Walsh, 6-0, 6-0, to pick up the first singles point. Lutz, at No. 3, sealed the match for the Sea Gulls, winning her match 6-0, 6-1 over Kelsey Turner.

Lohn picked up her second point of the dual with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Kirsten Cianci out of the No. 4 spot. Babo took the No. 5 match, 6-3, 6-0, over Emily Ruff.

The match of the night came out of the No. 1 spot, between Savage and Amanda Bercovici. The top player for Goucher (2-3) took the first set 7-6 (7-4), with Savage taking the second 7-6 (8-6). Bercovici took the match in the third set, a first-to-ten-point tiebreaker, 10-4.

The match concluded when sophomore Megan Knapp won her match over Hanora Barron, in a pro set, 8-3, from the No. 6 position to cap the evening.

Both teams are back in action tomorrow, hosting Dickinson College, at the SU Outdoor Tennis Center. The matches are scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m.
