SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University women's tennis team played its first home match of the 2016 season, defeating Juniata College, 9-0, at the SU Tennis Courts.
The Sea Gulls opened doubles play with three points, rolling at the top two doubles spots, and working for the third point at No. 3. Senior Natalie Savage and junior Zoe Moffat claimed an 8-1 win at No. 1 while junior Claudia Lohn and sophomore Megan Soderlund came up with an 8-2 win at No. 2.
In the final doubles match on court, senior Megan Knapp and freshman Taylor Cooper battled to a 9-7 win for the 3-0 team lead heading to singles play.
In singles play, Salisbury (3-1) was able to roll with three 6-0, 6-0 victories. Savage and Moffat, in the top two singles positions, remained perfect in singles play this year, and Soderlund earned the final 6-0, 6-0 win, at No. 4 singles.
Cooper nearly matched the shutout efforts, winning 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5. Knapp edged out Juniata's Vienna Cordier 6-4 in the opening set at No. 6 singles before racing to a 6-0 win in the second set.
The final point went the distance, with Lohn grabbing a 6-2 win in the opening set before Chen Nora Tsai turned the tables in the second for Juniata (1-1) with a 6-1 set win. Lohn was able to roll in the third-set super-tiebreaker, 10-2, to seal the sweep for the Gulls.
Salisbury will be back in action at the SU Tennis Courts on Sunday, February 21, hosting Bridgewater (Va.) University. That match is scheduled to begin at noon.
