Women's tennis picks up first win of season, 9-0, over Catholic

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University women's tennis team rolled to a 9-0 win on Friday afternoon against visiting Catholic University of America at the SU Tennis Courts.

The win was the first of the season for the Sea Gulls (1-3), and came in their first of five home matches this season.

Salisbury opened with a sweep of the doubles matches, as freshmen Julia Kwedi and Annika Kezman rolled to an 8-1 win at No. 1 followed by an 8-3 win at No. 3 from freshman Jordan Schaefer and sophomore Shannon Hickman. The final doubles point came from the duo of senior Claudia Lohn and sophomore Taylor Cooper, who earned an 8-2 victory at No. 2.

Salisbury kept the momentum rolling into the singles matches. Kwedi picked up a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 2 and four other Sea Gulls allowed their Catholic (3-2) counterparts no more than three games in straight-set wins.

Kezman collected a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 1, while Lohn was good for a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 3. Cooper picked up a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 4 and Schaefer was good for a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 6.

The closest match of the day came at No. 5 where junior Sage Cole came from behind to win her opening set 7-5. Cole turned things up in the second set to close out the match with a 6-1 win.

The Sea Gulls will be off on Saturday, and return to action on Sunday, February 26 hosting Bridgewater (Va.) College beginning at 9 a.m.
