Women's tennis earns 9-0 win against Penn St.-Harrisburg in CAC first round

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University women's tennis team opened play in the 2019 Capital Athletic Conference tournament on Saturday afternoon, hosting Penn State University-Harrisburg in the quarterfinal round, coming away with a 9-0 win.

The third-seeded Sea Gulls picked up three quick points in doubles play, with the pair of senior Shannon Hickman and freshman Sarah Dover taking the opening point with an 8-1 win at No. 3 before junior Annika Kezman and sophomore Laura Brown got a point at No. 1, winning 8-3. Junior Jordan Schaefer and sophomore Sydney Soto closed out doubles with the final point at No. 2, winning by an 8-2 score.

In singles, it was more of the same for Salisbury (12-6), sealing the team victory with wins at No. 3 singles by junior Kayla Allen, by a 6-4, 6-1 score, and at No. 6 from freshman Karlie Allen, by a 6-2, 6-3 score.

The Lions (8-12) saw their other four losses come in straight sets, as well. Dover collected a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 2 before freshman Kathryn Allen grabbed a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 5. The final two wins came by a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 1 from Hickman and a 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) win at No. 4 to close out the match by junior Ariana Leggio.

Salisbury will now head to second-seeded Christopher Newport University for a CAC semifinal match on Wednesday, May 1.
