SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University volleyball team closed out the home portion of its regular-season schedule on Wednesday night, taking down Capital Athletic Conference-foe Wesley College 3-0 (25-13, 25-19, 25-11) at Maggs Physical Activities Center.
After Wesley took the first point in the opening set, sophomore Katie Stouffer answered with two-straight kills to give Salisbury the lead, which it would not concede for the rest of the game.
Senior Nikki Binetti tallied a service ace to push the lead to 4-1, before the Sea Gulls continued to control the opening moments to build a 16-4 advantage on a 12-3 run, capped by a kill from sophomore Shannon Russell.
SU (19-9, 4-4 CAC) never had the lead drop below nine for the rest of the set, cruising to the 1-0 lead in the frame, as sophomore Jordan Lawson notched the winning kills. Lawson concluded the night with seven kills, only finishing behind Stouffer's team-leading 11, to help pace the Sea Gull offense.
Two kills from senior Julie Poston gave the Gulls a 2-1 lead to start the second set, never trailing from there for the second-straight set.
The Wolverines kept the beginning of the set close, but with an 11-7 lead, the Sea Gulls went on a 6-2 run, sparked by a Binetti kill for a 17-9 advantage.
After increasing the advantage to 21-11, Wesley cut the lead to 21-16, before consecutive kills from Poston and Stouffer regained momentum for SU and helped to take the second set.
After a Russell service ace, Stouffer registered back-to-back kills for a quick 3-0 lead in the third set.
Russell and Lawson each added kills to help push the advantage to 10-3, as the Gulls grabbed quick control of the set.
A kill for Poston made the lead double digits at 16-6, and the Sea Gulls collected nine of the last 14 points in the set to take the match, including a 7-0 run to make the score 24-10.
Salisbury finishes out its regular season on Saturday, November 1, as the Sea Gulls travel to Frostburg State University; the match is set for 1 p.m.
