1995 Season Recap
In his first year with the SSU cross country teams, head coach Cliff Latham guided the 1995 teams to yet another berth into the South Regional as the two teams picked up top-3 finishes at the Capital Athletic Conference Championships. His leadership was beneficial to the whole team as seven men and women claimed All-CAC honors.
Although struggling at the beginning of the year, the men's team placed second at the CNU Captains Classic before taking home first place laurels. The strong performances continued with a first place finish at its only home meet of the year, the SSU Tidewater Invitational. The men placed third at the CAC Championships where junior Ryan McComas led all Sea Gull runners with a fifth place finish in a time of 28:30. The squad was paced by the efforts of juniors Wes Smith (11th, 29:19), Joe Waldron (13th, 29:25) and Matt Piotrowski (14th, 29:29). McComas claimed All-CAC first team honors while Smith, Waldron and Piotrowski each were named to the second team. Waldon led all SSU runners at the Mason-Dixon Championships with an 11th place finish (27:28). At the regional meet, the men placed ninth as McComas finished 27th to lead the Sea Gull pack.
The Sea Gull women came out of the gates on fire as they won three of their first five meets. After finishing seventh at the Maryland State Championships, the squad placed second at the CAC Championships and third at the Mason-Dixon Championships. The strong performances landed the team a spot into the South Regional meet, where SSU finished sixth. The team was spearheaded by the individual performance of Lori Frei, who won five races on the year. Her biggest accomplishment was a first place finish at the Mason-Dixon Championship (19:06). Frei was one of three All-CAC first team performers as she was joined by juniors Vicki Huchko and Kelly Delp. The trio also picked up All-Mason-Dixon honors where Frei and Huchko picked up first team laurels and Delp was placed on the second team. The hardware continued to rain for Frei and Delp where the pair was named to the All-South Region second team.
