SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University men's and women's cross country programs will rely on a great mix of experience and youth in the upcoming 2019 season as both teams return a solid corps of veterans while also welcoming a new group of Sea Gulls. Head coach Jim Jones wants all of his student-athletes to "finish the 2019 season and put together a great regular season as well as a successful postseason."
The women's team will be anchored by returners Ashley Mazer, Sydney Ruckel, and Christine Sturm. Mazer finished the 2018 season as the team's MVP while also being the first Sea Gull to be named United States Track & Field Cross Country Coaches Association All-Region since 2007. Meanwhile, Ruckel finished 2018-19 strong at the Capital Athletic Conference Track & Field Championships winning both the 5k and 10k while Sturm was solid throughout both the cross country and track & field seasons.
On the men's side the team will be led by Mason Kimbell, Jeromy Green, and Corey Young. Kimbell finished the 2018 season as an All-CAC honoree for the first time in his career, earning second-team accolades after a 13th-place finish at the 2018 CAC Cross Country Championships.
Overall, both teams will be looking to improve on their finishes at the 2018 conference championships as the women placed fourth and men finished fifth. The women's program entered 2019 ranked fourth in the cross country preseason poll while the men were picked to finish fifth.
Salisbury opens the season on Saturday, August 31 when it hosts the annual Salisbury University Fall Classic at Winter Place Park beginning at 9:45 a.m.
