Sea Gulls win three at Maryland Cup

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - The Salisbury University volleyball team took three of four matches at the Maryland Cup, held this weekend, at St. Mary's College.

The Sea Gulls (9-4) cruised through their first two matches on Friday night with 3-0 shutout wins over Washington College, 30-19, 30-19, 30-18, and Hood College, 30-8, 30-12, 30-19.

On Saturday, the Sea Gulls started the day with a match against St. Mary's College (Md.). The two teams played five days ago in Salisbury, Md., as the Sea Gulls won 3-0. In this re-match the Sea Gulls earned the same outcome as they blanked the Seahawks, 3-0. The first game was forfeited midway through due to an injured St. Mary's player which forced the Seahawks to forfeit the second game. The two teams played the third game as Salisbury prevailed, 30-10, 30-0, 30-25.

In the last and final match for the Sea Gulls this weekend Salisbury went up against Johns Hopkins University for the second time this season. In the first meeting the Sea Gulls defeated the Blue Jays in straight games, 3-0. This time around JHU turned the tables and won 28-30, 28-30, 28-30. The loss snapped Salisbury's seven-match winning streak.

Salisbury sophomore Stacey Krebs had 16 kills in the loss; senior Abbey Petrecca had 40 assists and 21 digs followed by 15 digs from sophomore Jaime Marzocchi.

The Sea Gulls will next be in action this Wednesday as they travel to Washington, D.C. to take on Catholic University of America for a 7 p.m. match.

Note: Senior Abbey Petrecca was named to the All-Tournament team.
