BALTIMORE - The back-to-back-to-back games
caught up to the Salisbury University volleyball team as the Sea
Gulls lost in the semifinals of the 2006 Asics/Johns Hopkins
Invitational in Baltimore. Salisbury advanced to the semifinals,
after going 2-1 in pool play, where it faced Capital Athletic
Conference foe Marymount University in a non-conference match.
The Sea Gulls pushed the Saints to a fifth game but ran out of
steam as they lost by a score of 26-30, 30-26, 24-30, 30-23, 10-15.
Freshman Nicole Massarelli was named to the all-tournament team
as she had nine kills in the semifinal match. Senior Abbey Petrecca
had 40 assists and sophomore Jaime Marzocchi came up with 19 digs
in the loss.
SU (2-2) won its first match of the day by beating Sewanee
University of the South in straight sets 30-23, 30-17, 30-27. The
Sea Gulls then turned around and played Randolph-Macon College and
lost in five games; 21-30, 31-29, 30-27, 26-30, 11-15. Petrecca had
a game-high 47 assists and sophomore Stacey Krebs spiked home 13
kills in the Randolph-Macon loss.
Salisbury will participate in the Gettysburg College
Invitational next weekend.
