SALISBURY, Md. - The Salisbury University men's
basketball team dropped its fourth consecutive Capital Athletic
Conference game Tuesday evening, 80-74, to first-place Hood College
in front of a crowd of 300 at the Maggs Center.
Hood center Jesse Gutekunst (27 points, 10 rebounds) recorded
his 10th double-double of the season as he scored 21 points in the
second half to lead the Blazers (14-3, 7-1 CAC) to their seventh
straight victory, a program record.
The Sea Gulls (9-8, 4-4 CAC) led by four at the break, 37-33,
but were outscored 47-37 in the second half en route to the
six-point loss.
SU senior Ray Williams continued his hot hand
as he shot 12-of-23 and finished with a game-high 28 points while
sophomore guard Devin Jones totaled 17 points on
5-of-10 shooting. Salisbury junior Gary Ward
scored 13 first half points and grabbed six rebounds for the game.
Hood opened the second half on a 10-0 run to take a 43-37 lead
with 16 minutes left in the game before Williams answered with a
layup to cut the lead to four, 43-39.
The Blazers led by as much as eight, 47-39, before the Sea Gulls
went on a 21-6 run to take a 60-53 lead with six minutes on the
clock. Hood answered in quick fashion to tie the score at 60 on a
pair of free-throws by Ryan Junghans (18 points).
Hood added a three-pointer by Tim Abercrombie (13 points) and a
free throw by Gutekunst to take a two-point advantage, 64-62 with
five minutes left in the game.
The score went back and forth over the next two-minutes before
Salisbury tied the game for the 13th and final time at 66 with 3:44
to play.
Hood's Sean Robine (six points) hit a three-pointer to take a
69-66 lead and put the Blazers ahead for good.
The Blazer's were led by Gutekunst who shot 11-of-13 from the
floor and recorded his 10th double-double of the season as he
totaled 27 points and 10 rebounds. Junghans added 18 points for
Hood and Abercrombie tallied 13 points.
Salisbury was outscored 36-22 in the paint and the Blazers
converted 15 SU turnovers into 17 points.
The Sea Gulls return to action on Saturday, January 27, as they
travel to York, Pa., to face the Spartans in a CAC game. Salisbury
defeated the Spartans, 93-81, earlier in the season.
