WESTMINSTER, Md.- The Salisbury University
volleyball team faced Marymount (Va.) and St. Mary's (Minn.) on Day
One of the McDaniel Tournament Friday evening and spilt the two
matches with a 3-0 win over Marymount and a 3-1 loss to St.
Mary's.
SU (21-7, CAC 5-0) cruised by Marymount in straight sets 30-21,
30-14, 30-17. The Sea Gulls' attack was led by junior
Stacey Krebs and sophomore Rachel
Downes. Krebs led the maroon and gold with 13 kills and
Downes added eight of her own.
Junior Jaime Marzocchi had 29 assists and added
four serving aces while sophomore Nicole
Massarelli posted four aces and sophomore Gabby
Long had 10 digs.
The second match of the day did not fair as well for the Sea Gulls
as they lost to St. Mary's in four sets 24-30, 38-40, 31-29, 18-30.
Downes and Krebs posted big numbers in the loss as they combined
for 34 kills and 45 digs.
Long had a career day as she accounted for 39 digs and tied a
school record for digs in a match. Kara Kowalski set the record in
1998 against York (Pa.) College. Massarelli had 13 kills while
Marzocchi added 39 assists in the loss.
The Sea Gulls will compete in Day Two of the McDaniel Tournament on
Saturday, October 13, at 10 a.m. as they face McDaniel. The
afternoon game has yet to be determined.
