NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Salisbury University
baseball coach Doug Fleetwood notched his 200th
career victory as the Sea Gulls' head skipper with a 5-2 road win
against Christopher Newport University on Tuesday afternoon.
Fleetwood's career record at SU now stands at 200-72-6 since he
started in 2001.
In the top of the third inning the 26th-ranked Sea Gulls (4-1)
started off strong with a two RBI double from third basemen
Alex Vitale, his sixth and seventh RBI of the
season.
Salisbury added to its lead in the fifth when junior
Mark Bostwick scored his second run of the game
when freshman Mike Celenza flew out to
centerfield.
The Gulls continued their offensive prowess in the sixth,
courtesy of back-to-back doubles from senior Brian
Theibault and junior Brian Camper to
increase the lead to four. Senior Colin Kraus got
his fourth RBI of the season on an error by Christopher Newport
shortstop Trae Baily, which scored Camper.
Christopher Newport (6-2) got on the board with two runs in the
bottom of the eighth, one from Baily and one from pinch-hitter
Parker Neal.
SU starter Dan Oleynik (1-0) pitched six full
innings where he allowed three hits and struck out six CNU batters
to earn his first win of the season.
The Sea Gulls will open up a weekend home stand this Friday,
February 23, against Eastern followed by a Saturday doubleheader
against Staten Island.
