SALISBURY, Md. - The Salisbury University
softball team finished the 2007 Sea Gull Invitational with a 1-3
record after it dropped a pair of games on Saturday at Henry S.
Parker Athletic Complex to Christopher Newport University and
King's (Pa.) College.
In game one, the Sea Gulls (6-4) loaded the bases, with no outs,
but couldn't plate a runner.
Junior Meaghan Murphy singled to lead off the
inning and advanced to second on a Stacey Malarkey
single. One batter later senior Nicole Fuqua
loaded the bases with a single to left field. Senior catcher
Tee Droneburg struck out looking for the first
out. Junior Ashley Stern followed and lined into a
double play to end the Sea Gull rally and game.
Murphy and Fuqua each finished the game 3-for-4 from the plate
while Malarkey had the only multi-hit game for SU. Junior Kirsten
Wells (3-2) suffered the loss to the Captains.
The Sea Gulls jumped out early in game two on the Monrachs as
they plated a first inning run on a Malarkey RBI double down the
left field line. Freshman Kelly Waskewicz scored
from third on the double.
King's knotted the game at one in the bottom of the second on a
RBI single from Julie Bidwell. The game would remain scoreless
until the bottom of the sixth when Bidwell slammed a two-run home
run off SU pitcher Stacy Davis (2-2) to give the Monrachs a 3-1
lead.
Waskewicz had two hits against the Monrachs while Malarkey,
Fuqua and sophomore Meaghan O'Gara each had a hit
in the loss.
Tournament champion Lynchburg College went a perfect 4-0 during
the two-day tournament.
The Sea Gulls return to action tomorrow (Sunday, March 11) as
they host Allegheny College at 11 am at Sea Gull Field in a
doubleheader.
