SALISBURY, Md. - The Salisbury University
softball team split a doubleheader with McDaniel College here
Friday at Sea Gull Field where SU won the second game 10-6 after
its dropped the opener, 4-2.
In the second game of the doubleheader, McDaniel (8-10) jumped
out to a 4-0 lead off five second inning singles. Freshman Lauren
Toomey and junior Diana Rosemier each had two RBI. However, the Sea
Gulls (16-6) answered with a run in the second and seven in the
third. Jen Cahall singled twice and had two RBIs
in the inning. Freshman designated player Ali
Ritter (3-for-4, two runs, two RBIs) knocked a two-run
home run over the right field fence, and six other Gulls tallied
hits to cap the comeback. The Sea Gulls went on to close out the
victory 10-6. SU piled up 16 hits, 13 of which were singles.
Sophomore Stacy Davis (5-2) earned her fifth
win as she pitched the complete game and recorded six strikeouts.
In the first game, McDaniel capitalized on Salisbury errors for
two of its four runs. The Green Terror also got a clutch two-run
double off the bat of sophomore third baseman Brooke Dixon in the
top of the sixth. The hit lifted McDaniel to a 4-2 lead, as the
Green Terror handed SU its first loss of the season.
Jess Smith held the Sea Gulls scoreless for six straight innings
after she allowed a two run homer to sophomore Stacey
Malarkey in the first inning. For Malarkey, the smash to
deep center was her sixth home run of the season. Smith improved to
6-6 on the year while Salisbury starter Kirsten
Wells dropped to 9-4. Wells went the distance as she gave
up four runs on six hits and struck out six.
Salisbury will travel to Washington D.C. to take on Catholic in
its Capital Athletic Conference opener on Tuesday, April 3.
