VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The Salisbury University
softball team split a Sunday doubleheader with Lynchburg College at
a neutral site in Virginia Beach, Va. The Sea Gulls won the first
game 6-4 in come from behind fashion to earn their fifth straight
win to open up the 2007 season. SU would then turnaround and lose
10-2 to the Hornets in the second game.
Salisbury (5-1) trailed 4-3 going into the seventh inning in the
first game with Lynchburg. The Sea Gulls tied the game at four when
sophomore Stacey Malarkey doubled home senior
Nichole Fuqua. Junior Ashley
Stern then brought home Malarkey on a sacrifice fly.
Senior catcher Tee Droneburg (3-for-4, 2 RBI)
supplied the insurance run as she singled home junior
Kirsten Wells who reached on a double. Junior
pitcher Kortni Pedlow earned the win.
In the second game, Lynchburg scored four runs in the fourth
inning and three in the fifth to put the game out of reach. The Sea
Gulls scored both of their runs in the fifth when Fuqua singled
home sophomore Brittany Sullivan and Stern plated
freshman Savannah Tinsley on a RBI single. SU left
nine runners on base. Sophomore pitcher Stacy
Davis suffered the loss.
Salisbury started the weekend off with a four-game sweep at the
Virginia Wesleyan College tournament.
The Sea Gulls will open up their home 2007 schedule on
Wednesday, March 7, against Eastern Shore rival Washington (Md.)
College at 2 p.m.
