YORK, Pa. - The Salisbury University softball
team split a doubleheader Saturday on the road against York (Pa.)
College in Capital Athletic Conference action. The Sea Gulls (23-7,
7-1 CAC) won the first game 7-4 and lost the second game 3-2 as the
Spartans (15-15, 5-3 CAC) scored two runs in the fifth inning to
come-from-behind and defeat Salisbury.
The Sea Gulls secured the top seed in next week's CAC tournament
while the Spartans will be seeded No. 2.
SU sophomore Stacey Malarkey (3-for-4) blasted
two home runs in the first game, in the first and fifth innings, as
she scored three runs and knocked in three RBIs. She now has eight
home runs for the season and the Gulls have 40 HRs as a team
through 30 games.
Starting pitcher Stacy Davis (9-2) picked up
the complete game win as she surrendered four runs, all unearned,
on eight hits, two walks and struck out five batters.
Salisbury scored two runs in the fourth, fifth and seventh
innings to go along with the one run in the first from Malarkey's
solo homer. SU second baseman Nichole Fuqua went
3-for-4 at the plate, scored twice and added one RBI.
In game two, the Spartans rallied to score two runs in the
bottom of the fifth to take a 3-2 lead it wouldn't relinquish. SU
starter Kirsten Wells (11-5) gave up three
straight hits to begin the fifth which allowed the Spartans to knot
the game at 2-2. York (Pa.) scored the go ahead run on a fielder's
choice.
Salisbury tied the game at one apiece in the second as catcher
Tee Dronenburg drove home Brittany
Lounge on a RBI single along with an error on the Spartan
left fielder. The Gulls took their 2-1 lead in the fourth when
Fuqua scored from third base on a Dronenburg sacrifice fly to
center field.
