SALISBURY, Md. - It was a special afternoon for
the Salisbury University softball program and current assistant
coach Lacey Lister who had her No. 14 jersey
retired in between Wednesday's doubleheader sweep of Washington
(Md.) College. The Sea Gulls (32-7) won the first game 7-1 and
followed with a 7-0 shutout in the second game over the Shorewomen
(9-27).
Lister joins an elite group of former student-athletes as she is
only the fifth person to have her jersey retired at SU. The others
are Jason Coffman (men's lacrosse), Dave Cottle (men's lacrosse),
Andre Foreman (men's basketball) and Stacy Stem (field hockey).
"Wow! I don't know what to say," said Lister after the on-field
ceremony. "I just went out there and did something I loved to do.
It never crossed my mind that I would have my jersey retired."
Lister pitched for the maroon and gold from 2003-06 where she
was a four-time All-American, a three-time CAC Player of the Year
and three-time All-CAC member. She set every school pitching record
and concluded her career ranked in the top 10 of eight different
NCAA Division III pitching categories. Lister won 108 games at SU,
ranked third all-time in Division III, and struck out 1,096
batters, also ranked in the top three. She started 117 games for SU
and appeared in 137 total games for the Gulls who won four CAC
championships, made four trips to the NCAA tournament and three
appearances in the NCAA College World Series where the Sea Gulls
were national runner-ups in 2003 and 2005.
The Denton, Md. native, also earned 50 shutouts, second
all-time, and hurled over 793 innings in her four-year career.
Lister's winning percentage of .871 ranks seventh all-time as SU
went a combined 163-28-1 during Lacey's career. After graduation
Lister was drafted by the Michigan Ice of the National Pro
Fast-Pitch League to become the first-ever Sea Gull to go
professional in softball.
"I give credit to all of my teammates over the years," said
Lister, who is in her first-season as an assistant coach at her
alma mater. "Without a doubt I couldn't have done what I did
without my teammates."
On the field, Salisbury continued to crush the ball as the Sea
Gulls slammed three more home runs to up their season total to 56.
All-CAC sophomore Stacey Malarkey connected on a
home run in each game. She is now second on the team in homers (11)
and RBIs (42).
Sophomore All-CAC pitcher Stacy Davis (14-2)
allowed one run on six hits in the first game as she struck out
three and walked one. Senior co-captain Tee
Dronenburg, the All-CAC catcher, connected on a solo homer
in the third inning. SU scored four runs in the sixth inning as WC
pitcher Emily Adams (2-10) suffered the loss.
In the second game, SU hit five doubles and scored three runs in
the first and fourth en route to the shutout victory. Malarkey
(2-for-3) hit a two-run shot in the first to start things off. CAC
Player of the Week Ali Ritter went a perfect
3-for-3 from the plate and scored a run. CAC Player and Rookie of
the Year Kelly Waskewicz went 2-for-4 as she hit
her 13th double of the season and scored a run. Designated player
Meaghan Murphy went 2-for-4 at the plate and
scored twice. Junior Kirsten Wells (15-5) earned her 15th win of
the season as she only allowed three hits and struck out four.
Salisbury will bring it's season best nine-game winning streak
into tomorrow's doubleheader (April 26) against visiting Villa
Julie College at 3 p.m.
