Salisbury, Md. - The Salisbury University
baseball team completed the two-game season sweep of Christopher
Newport University, 6-3, at Sea Gull Field. Salisbury won the
previous meeting on February 20, 5-2.
The Sea Gulls (27-7) broke a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the sixth
inning when junior Mark Bostwick
plated senior Alex Vitale (2-for-3, one RBI) on an
RBI groundout to second base. SU then followed with a pair of RBI
singles from catcher Pete Callahan and freshman
Hunter Wessells to put the maroon and gold up 6-3.
Wessells started the game off with a double down the left field
line and later stole his fifth base of the season.
SU got contributions from freshman Mike Celenza
who went 2-for-4 and ripped his 13th double of the season. Senior
Andrew Jensen also added an RBI double to up his
team-best RBI total (46).
Sea Gull bullpen pitcher Adam Keeling earned his
second win of the season as he went three and a third innings and
scattered three hits with no runs in relief work. Sophomore
Eric Willey racked up the save for the Gulls.
CNU (23-16) out hit SU by three hits and received two-hit games
from Michael Fawley, Trae Bailey and Mike Giarrizzi. The Captains
also committed three errors which led to one Sea Gull run.
Giarrizzi took the loss as he gave up six runs on seven hits and
struck out five.
Salisbury will return to action at home on April 30 to take on
Villa Julie in a 1:00 pm doubleheader.
