FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The No. 14 Salisbury
University softball team was eliminated from the 2007 NCAA Division
III tournament by Lynchburg College 6-2 on Sunday afternoon in the
Fayetteville regional. The Sea Gulls finish the season with a 39-9
record.
Two years off of making the Division III World Series, Salisbury
failed to make it out of its region for the second consecutive year
as it went 3-2 in tournament play. The Fayetteville regional was
considered the toughest field out of the eight regions this year.
SU won three in a row after it dropped the first game on Thursday.
SU outfielders Jen Cahall and
Kurisha Hoffman each drove in one
run in the loss. Freshmen Kelly
Waskewicz and Ali
Ritter and junior Kirsten
Wells all added a hit for the Sea Gull offense. SU
sophomore Stacy Davis recorded
the loss as she finished the season with a 19-4 record.
The Gulls split a doubleheader on March 4 with the Hornets
earlier this season. SU won the first game 6-4 and lost the second
game 10-2.
Salisbury started the day off with a win over No. 20 Marietta,
2-1, in a game that was suspended yesterday afternoon in the third
inning due to rain. The Gulls scored twice in the bottom of the
third inning as Waskewicz and Meaghan Murphy drove
in a run each.
Marietta (34-12) tried to mount a comeback in the top of the
seventh inning as it plated one run off of a two-out single from
junior Brandy Jacob.
SU pitcher Wells (17-5) earned the victory in the circle as she
went the distance and scattered four hits and gave up one run.
