BALTIMORE - The Salisbury University volleyball
team finished the second day of the Asics/Johns Hopkins
Invitational with a split as the Sea Gulls defeated UMass Boston in
straight sets but dropped a hard fought five-set match with host
Johns Hopkins University on Saturday afternoon.
The Sea Gulls took a 2-1 lead against the Blue Jays after falling
behind 0-1. Hopkins rallied in the fourth and fifth sets to finish
off Salisbury as the Gulls lost 18-30, 30-27, 30-28, 20-30,
12-15.
Sophomore Rachel Downes had 19 kills in the match
against the Blue Jays and was later named to the All-Tournament
team. Junior Jaime Marzocchi added 49 assists in
the showdown with the Blue Jays to go along with fellow junior
Stephanie Withers' 10 kills.
SU (3-1) swept its first match of the day against UMass Boston;
30-20, 30-19, 30-17. Senior Jessica Powell had 18
digs, Marzocchi made 33 assists and
Withers smashed 10 kills against UMB.
The Gulls finished the tournament with a 3-1 record and will remain
on the road next weekend when the maroon and gold travel to
Gettysburg, Pa. for the Bullets Invitational. Salisbury will face
Eastern Mennonite and Lycoming on Friday at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.,
respectively.
